Edible oils further up; precious metals decline; sugar stead

MUMBAI, May 12: Edible oils firmed up in an otherwise dull and listless trading at the oilseeds market here today.

Among edible oils, groundnut oil firmed up from Rs 435 to Rs 436 on good local offtake in the wake of poor arrivals. Groundnuts ruled steady. Imported palm oil rose sharply from Rs 398 to Rs 402 per 10 kgs in the absence of arrivals and reduction in stocks as against good demand.

The industrial sector was dull and listless. Both castor oil and linseed oil ended steady in the absence of support.

In the futures market, castorseeds June opened higher at Rs 1267 on overnight buying. Prices later improved further on good enquiries from exporters to meet export commitments and closed at Rs 1273 from the previous close of Rs 1263.50. Castorseeds September contract opened at Rs 1328 and on fresh bull support from leading operators advanced further to close at Rs 1334.

Groundnut oil firmed up to Rs 436 from Rs 435. Palm oil hardened to Rs 402 from Rs 398 previously. Groundnuts ready at Rs 1970,linseed oil at Rs 390, linseeds ready at Rs 1400, castor oil commercial at Rs 280 and castorseeds ready Madras at Rs 1248 were unaltered from the previous close.

Bullion declines

Both the precious metals declined on the bullion market here today on heavy stockists offerings. Silver tumbled down due to poor industrial demand as against increased arrivals through imports which induced stockists selling to reduce stocks. Weak overseas advices also helped the downtrend.

Silver ready .999 fineness dropped to Rs 8190 from Rs 8285. Raw silver .916 fineness slumped to Rs 8085 from Rs 8185. Tenderable silver tumbled down to Rs 8195 from Rs 8290 previously.

Gold prices reacted in the absence of local buying interest as against increased arrivals.

Standard gold declined to Rs 4080 from Rs 4095. 22-carat gold was nominally quoted lower at Rs 3775 from Rs 3790. Ten- tola gold bar .999 purity lost Rs 200 to close at Rs 47,900 from the previous close of Rs 48,100.

Sugar steady

A steady trendprevailed on the sugar market. Activity was restricted.

M-30 ruled at Rs 1525-1590 and S-30 at Rs 1520-1533 a quintal ex-godown. Ex-octroi checkpost, M-30 found sellers at Rs 1515-1530 and S-30 at Rs 1505-1515.

There were on tenders as the entire quantity for the fortnight has been sold out.

Grains quiet

A quiet condition continued on the grains market. Activity was restricted.

Green peas Canadian were placed at Rs 1550-1575, Canadian at Rs 1161 and white Canadian at Rs 905-925 a quintal. Mynamar urad and moong were on offer at Rs 1050-1075 and at Rs 1750-2000 respectively. Australian gram found sellers at Rs 1150-1175. Kabuli gram A-2 ruled at Rs 2600, B-2 at Rs 2300 and C-2 at Rs 1550-1600. Rajma chitra deshi and imported were transacted at Rs 2300 and at Rs 2200 respectively. Red rajma imported were placed at Rs 1950.

MP Sarbati wheat in the price range of Rs 1200-1400 were well-held on tight supply due to reduced inflow from the producing centres. Price there is reportedly out of paritywith the local market. Saurashtra Lokvan at Rs 650-750, SW at Rs 750-900, north Gujarat Rs 615-675 and Ganaganagar at Rs 675-725 were steady. Milling wheat were quoted at Rs 585-590.

Rice SLO were placed at Rs 950-1000. Permal medium ruled at Rs 850-950 and superior at Rs 1100-1200. AP IR-64 were placed at Rs 850-875.

Gujarat cottons up

A steady-to-better trend prevailed on the cotton market.

Short and medium staple items of Gujarat came in for better buying support and their prices were edged up by Rs 100 a candy. V-797 ruled at Rs 14,700-15,000, Morbi wagad at Rs 14,300-14,400 and kala-ginned at Rs 13,300-13,400 spot. Sanker ruled in the range of Rs 17,500-21,500.

In Punjab zone, price ruled steady. J-34 saw-ginned good average ruled at Rs 1990-2005, cart-selected at Rs 2065-2145 and Bengal Deshi at Rs 1525-1575 a maund.

Yarn listless

In listless trading prices hovered around the previous day's levels on the yarn market.

Viscose filament yarns bright cones first quality CenturyRayon 150dn ruled at Rs 228, 120dn at Rs 247, 100dn at Rs 265 and 75dn at Rs 269 a kg. Among coarse deniers 300dn were transacted at Rs 166, 450dn at Rs 150 and 600dn at Rs 144. 120dn dull cones were on offer at Rs 261.

Nylon yarn 15/1/0dn Shreelon found sellers at Rs 265. Gujnil 20/1/0dn at Rs 230, 30/1/0dn at Rs 380 and 111/24/0dn at Rs 168 were also static.

Polyester yarn grey first quality of medium-sized units 150dn weft ruled at Rs 70-74 and warp at Rs 82-86.
