SEOUL, MAY 12: Public sector members of South Korea's militant union umbrella group on Tuesday threatened to stage strikes after June 5 if their demands were not met."If our demands are not met...we will prepare to hold all-out strikes at any time after June 5," the Korea Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) said in a statement.Nearly a quarter of the confederation's 550,000 members belong to the public sector, including those working for railroads, subways, buses, taxis, hospitals and telecommunications a KCTU spokeswoman said.
The KCTU wants the government to guarantee job security and labour rights and establish a tripartite committee of labour, government and public workers to oversee public sector reform.
The KCTU threatened nationwide strikes this month or early in June to protest rising unemployment.
Union leaders have demanded fresh negotiations on laws making mass layoffs easier and laws allowing the employment of temporary workers.President Kim Dae-jung has vowed to take sternmeasuresagainst Union militancy.
