Manch wants curbs on US, Japanese firms

Veeshal Bakshi & Siddharth Zarabi
NEW DELHI, May 17: Swadeshi Jagran Manch, a key constituent of BJP's parent body Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), wants the Vajpayee government to restrict business operations of multinational corporations from the US, Japan, Germany and other countries which have imposed economic sanctions on India.

Manch's national organiser Muralidhar Rao told The Financial Express that SJM along with other organisations will soon begin a nationwide campaign for boycott of products sold by these countries' MNCs or their Indian subsidiaries. On the other hand, SJM will press the Centre for giving preferential treatment to companies from countries such as UK, France and Russia while giving clearances to foreign investment proposals in key industrial sectors and awarding government contracts and tenders.

"There should be a discriminatory policy against companies of those countries which do not support India's strategic and defence interests. We stand by those, who stood by us. This principle must be applied withfull vigour," the Manch's national chief said. When asked whether the government should keep Boeing of the US out of the race for aircraft purchase by both Air India and Indian Airlines, Rao said: "Any company from any of these countries whether it is Boeing, Pepsi, Coca Cola, Enron or Suzuki should not been given privilege of doing business at par with companies from countries which have stood by India at this crucial time."

"We are keenly watching the government's reaction. Internally, we will pressurise them to marginalise and restrict companies from the US, Germany, Japan and other such countries which have imposed sanctions," he said. Commenting on the loss of aid and soft loans by these countries, Rao said: "India should not bother about aid from countries which do not share our strategic concerns. Foreign aid is not critical to our development. Today, they need us more than we need them."

Rao suggested that the shortfall in aid can be met by setting up a national fund. "People of this country haveutmost respect for Vajpayee. One call by him to the nation for contribution to such a fund will surely bring in thousands of crore," Rao said.
