Georgia wheat exports look up
REUTERS
ATHENS, May 18: Getting dry mostly sunny and dry conditions encouraged an abundance of agricultural activity throughout the State, according to the Georgia Agricultural Statistics Service. Soils dried rapidly with topsoil moisture ratings falling to very short in the southwestern part of the State. In many areas, this was the first week of the entire season with no rainfall. The dry weather remained through the week end, and with warmer temperatures soils dried further. A few fields are being irrigated. Near ideal conditions enabled farmers to make good progress in land preparation, planting and harvesting hay. Cotton and peanut planting were extremely active, with about two-fifths of each crop planted during the week.Corn planting in the northern sections of the State made good progress, and as a result, Statewide planting nearly equals a normal year. Conditions declined slightly. Some areas reported corn stressed because of the dry soils. Many fields are being irrigated. Producers in the extreme Southare still applying nitrogen and "laying by" corn fields. Hail damage from a previous week's storm resulted in some fields being replanted. Cotton producers took advantage of the dry weather during the week to plant about 40 percent of the entire cotton crop. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
