MUMBAI, May 19: Air India on Monday began an additional service to Jakarta to help Indians to leave the crises-ridden country. The first 203-seater A310 flight AI440/431 scheduled for Singapore was extended to Jakarta. To evacuate Indian nationals from Indonesia, Air-India will extend at least one of its 17 weekly services to Singapore for the next four days.
These will be in addition to the regular three-weekly schedule flights to Jakarta via Singapore. The additional capacity on this route will continue until further directives are issued by the ministry of civil aviation.
According to the information available to Air India, around 2,000 Indian expatriates, including their family members, are willing to come back to India.
"If needed, the services can be further enhanced," an AI spokesman said. The present change has not affected the other flights but in case of more frequency, the company may need to reshuffle some of its services, he added.
As the Singapore-bound flight has been extended toJakarta, the passengers booked for the return flight will be adjusted with other flights.
All these flights will generate revenue unless the government plans to foot the bill.
