CHENNAI, May 22: The domestic paging market is expected to have a three-million subscriber base by the turn of the century. The rise will be propelled by a minimum 45 per cent growth in the regional language pager subscriptions, according to Motorola's senior officials.Launching the new Scriptor, the regional language pager, Motorola Paging Division, head of marketing, (India and Saarc) Ajay Sachdeva said, the response to the regional pagers in the northern markets had been "very encouraging." Perceiving a similar market in the south, the Bangalore design centre of Motorola has developed a similar system in four south-Indian languages, he said. Comparing the domestic pager market with the international scenario, country sales manager Narendra Nayak said, "Our country was the fastest to touch the one-million subscriber mark. But still when seen in context of the population of the country, this figure means a less than 1 per cent market penetration. Hence, the market potential is huge," he said.
The way togrowth, the company feels, is through language paging. Citing examples of mini-metros, Sachdeva said, "Nearly 40 per cent of the subscribers in mini-metros like Pune are language-paging subscribers. And with the paging circles coming in addition to the subscriber base will be the retail segment of the population which is much more comfortable with regional languages than with English."
