Mumbai celltel owners may have to pay wireless fee

TM Arun Kumar
Mumbai, May 24: The two cellular operators of Mumbai, BPL Mobile and Hutchison Max, will pass on the DoT-imposed annual wireless licence fee of Rs 100 per subscriber to their subscribers, after having subsidised them for the past two and a half years. While BPL Mobile has sent a letter to all its subscribers informing them of the charge imposed by DoT and its intention to continue this during the current billing cycle (for the month of May), its city rival, Hutchison Max, has also decided to follow suit. It is understood that Hutchison Max has already started charging its new customers this wireless licence fee and will extend this to existing customers from next month.

The operators had till now refrained from charging their subscribers the Rs 100 licence fee due to the intense competition prevailing in the market. They were, instead, taking the charge in their own books. According to the companies, they had to take this step to expand the market as cellular telephony was a new concept at thattime.

According to sources, both the operators have decided to charge their subscribers this licence fee as they are being faced with low air time usage leading to low billing per subscriber which, in turn, is causing heavy cash losses.
