Equities drifted further downwards on the opening day of the new account on the National Stock Exchange today in the wake of fresh selling pressure. The NSE-50 (nifty) index, opening steady at 1104.05, later moved downwards to close at 1090.95, exhibiting a fall of 13.50 points over yesterday's close of 1104.45.The dollar NSE-50 (defty) began down at 924.65, fluctuated between 929.55 and 913.55, and closed at 915.30 from previous close of 930.30, netting a loss of 15 points. The mid-cap index, however, improved by 7.90 points to 1640.00 from previous close of 1632.10.
The advances outnumbered the declines with 576 scrips recording gains and 436 showing losses, and 87 were steady. 137 securities had hit their price bands.
The total volume of business was sharply up at Rs 2313.73 crore from 727.08 lakhs shares and 2,33,113 trades. Total traded value of debentures was Rs 10.93 lakhs.
ITC led the market with the highest turnover of Rs.751.17 crore and was down by 8.36 per cent due to heavy selling.Satyam Computer clocked a turnover of Rs.367.94 crore followed by Reliance (Rs.159.96 crore), Pentafour Software (Rs.109.41 crore) and Zee Telefilm (Rs.107.16 crore).
