NEW DELHI, June 5: Sunstar Lubricants Limited, a Rs 60 crore manufacturer of engine coolants, lubricants, automobile additives and brake fluids, is setting up a plant at Dharuhera in Haryana. The company is original equipment (OE) supplier to Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL), Telco, Mercedes Benz, Ashok Leyland Ltd, Daewoo Motors, Escorts, Escorts Yamaha and Hero Motors.
``In the last two years, our Golden Cruiser (GC) range of coolants has managed to make a big dent in the Rs 150 crore market and acquired market leadership with about 60 per cent share,'' said managing director Uday Singh.
Perhaps as a big compliment to the company, Maruti, with which Sunstar worked closely in developing two new products launched recently in the market, declared Sunstar as the best vendor in 1997 in the oils, coolants and lubricants category. Sunstar now has launched a third product in the category.
While MUL depends entirely on GC Super Protect range of coolants, Sunstar became one of the four companies in January 1998 tosupply Maruti Genuine Oil (MGO). ``Large companies such as Castrol which had hitherto remained unchallenged in this segment have had to reduce prices of GTX to the trade by as much as 25 per cent. Though the trade is yet to pass on this benefit to the consumers, in the long run it will benefit them immensely,'' claimed Singh.
Sunstar has been fighting it out with Castrol through aggressive advertising, preceding the price war. Singh claims other market leaders like Servo too jumped the MGO bandwagon. Sunstar has now launched a Maruti Genuine Lubrication Kit, consisting of a engine oil, coolant and oil filter.
