Compaq cuts Japanese price of DeskPro PCs: The Japanese unit of Compaq Computer Corp said on Friday it had cut the price of its DeskPro series of corporate desktop personal computers by two to 13 per cent. The Japan price for a low-end DeskPro 400N 5166X/1600 now starts at 158,000 yen, down from the previous price of 178,000 yen, Compaq said. It said it had also introduced three low-priced DeskPro EPmodels equipped with Microsoft Corp's Windows NT 4.0 operating system. The price cuts were a response to companies' needs to improve their computer facilities in a tough economic environment, Compaq said.E-mail asset sales to improve earnings: Appliance and building products group Email Ltd said on Friday it expected the planned sale of about A$160 million worth of assets would improve its earnings in the year to March 31, 1999.
