BHP copper output up

Refined copper production at Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd's US operations increased 32,800 tonnes, or 9.2 per cent, in the year ending May 1998 to 387,500 tonnes, the company said in its production report last week.The bulk of the increase was the result of its acquisition of Inmet Mining's White Pine refinery in January. The company's US copper mine production totalled 216,900 tonnes of contained copper in concentrate, up 1.5 per cent from last year. The increase came despite the shutdown of sulfide mining at the Pinto Valley complex in Arizona in February. The Robinson mine in Nevada (corrects from Utah) improved 1.2 per cent to 67,500 tonnes of copper in year ending May 1998. The San Manuel mine in Arizona improved 12.8 per cent to 95,900 tonnes.
