OUR CORPORATE BUREAU
CALCUTTA, June 23: Bata India Ltd's sales have grown by 11 per cent in the first five months of 1998 over the previous year, chairman A V Mudaliar told shareholders at the 65th annual general meeting here Tuesday. "During the first five months, we have done extremely well and continued to maintain the trend of increased sales and profitability. Our sales grew by 11 per cent over the previous year," he said.Later, talking to the reporters, Bata managing director W K Weston said the financial position of the company has improved in the last five months. "I cannot disclose the figures on the exact rise in the sales because that will be against the law of the land but I can assure everybody that the company is doing great," he said. The company is likely to wipe out its accumulated losses of Rs 19.47 crore as on December 31, 1997, by the end of the current year, Weston observed. Regarding Bata's industrial relations, Weston admitted that the management is facing stiff resistance from workers at the Batanagarfactory near Calcutta.
