Vietnam coffee trade slow
Reuter
Vietnam's coffee trade was slow with buyers getting fresh beans from Indonesia while local farmers held back the last of their stock waiting for better prices, traders said last week. "We haven't bought anything this week, and last week the market was already quiet," said one international trader based in southern Ho Chi Minh City. "Some farmers who need money started selling but volume was small." Robusta benchmark grade 2, 5.0 per cent broken was quoted at between $1,440-1,460 a tonne, FOB Saigon Port against $1,500-1,530 last week, and more than $100 a tonne down from two weeks ago.Liffe coffee ended mostly down on Thursday after active September was last traded at $1,573. Another trader said Vietnamese coffee was now being quoted at $140 below September's level and buyers had switched to Indonesia where the harvest started in May and is expected to peak in July and last through September. The trader in Ho Chi Minh City said some Vietnamese farmers wanted higher prices to compensate for the fallout froma prolonged drought which ended late last May.
