Pharma firms promote drugs, not health
On Father's Day in 1995, a company called Parke-Davis offered Peruvian pharmacists a bottle of wine if they ordered three boxes of its cough and cold remedy, Sinutab. A year later, another company, Perufarma, offered raffle prizes such as television sets, kitchen and dining-room furniture to pharmacy clerks.
FGI faces too many hurdles
The conditions have not improved much for the float-glass industry in the last one year; as manufacturers are still trying to break even. But there seems to be a consensus amongst manufacturers to scale down production to push up selling prices and second, there is a concerted effort to influence the government to impose an anti-dumping duty on float-glass.
A glaring exception
Indian Bank's Rs 301.50 crore net loss for 1997-98, taking the bank's accumulated losses to Rs 2,403 crore, should lead to considerable soul-searching on the desirability of using large amounts of taxpayers' money towards re-capitalising such banks.
