New Delhi, July 9: The domestic price of unwrought aluminium is lower than landed cost of imported unwrought metal, the minister of state of steel and mines, Ramesh Bais told the Lok Sabha.``The domestically produced unwrought aluminium price is around $1702 per metric tonne (mt) compared to $1842 per mt of the imported metal,'' Ramesh Bais said in a written reply.
He said these prices are based on the London Metal Exchange (LME) price of $1308 per mt during June. The cost of imports is higher due to additional costs in the form of freight, insurance, customs duty, countervailing duty, special countervailing duty and terminal handling charges, the minister said.
On the domestic demand of semi-fabricated aluminium products in 1997-97, Bais said in the organised sector rolled sheets recorded growth (provisional) of 16.2 per cent, 7.4 per cent in foils while there was negative growth of 8.9 per cent in extrusions.
