Indonesia may reschedule Paiton power projects
Jakarta, July 9: Indonesia's state electricity utility Perusahaan Litrik Negara (PLN) is considering rescheduling two power plants planned for Probolinggo, East Java, the Jakarta Post reported on Thursday.Quoting PLN president Djiteng Marsudi, the newspaper said the company needed to reschedule the projects, Paiton I and Paiton II, to ease its financial burden and address an increasing power glut on the Java-Bali power grid. ``The rescheduling is part of the agenda of the committee for the restructuring of PLN,'' Djiteng said in a hearing with a parliamentary committee on Wednesday, the Post reported. The 1,230 megawatt (mw) coal-fired Paiton I power plant is owned by a consortium consisting of America's Mission Energy and General Electric Japan's Mitsui and Indonesia's Batu Hitam Perkasa. Batu Hitam is controlled by Hashim Djojohadikusumo, a relative of former president Suharto. Paiton II, a 1,220 mw coal-fired power plant, is owned by a consortium comprising Siemens, PowerGen Plc and PT BumipertiwiTatapradita. Bumipertiwi is controlled by Suharto's son, Bambang Trihatmodjo.
