Syntel Software opens new facility in Chennai

OUR BUREAU
CHENNAI, July 10: The Chennai facility of Syntel Software Ltd, a subsidiary of the Michigan-based Syntel Inc, will primarily focus on the newly evolving technology of component-based implementation of IT solutions. It is the second global development centre of the Syntel Inc after the one established in Mumbai four years ago. According to Syntel Inc president and CEO Bharat Desai, the strategy for Syntel's Indian operations is to source the intellectual capital for high quality solutions development targeted by the company.

It will be a frontrunner for the paradigm shift that will take place after two or three years in the component-based systems solutions. Chennai will be the base for preparing the company to address the new changes that are coming in software solutions technology. During the opening of the new facility in Chennai on Friday, Desai said the new technology of component-based systems will see a significant growth once the threshold limit of the enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems isreached in the next couple of years.

"Business opportunities in the coming years will be shortened because of the rapid technological changes coming. These would lead to fundamental structural changes in most businesses and the business cycle itself will be for a shorter duration of 12 months or less," he said.

The component-based systems will be like prefabricated slabs and doors in construction activity. In the software code building systems, it will bring about standardised components enabling quicker and more efficient meshing of the systems.

Syntel, which is involved in three broad categories of work such as IT consulting, application outsourcing (through its own product styled IntelliSourcing) and enterprise solutions (the division began its operations last year), is focusing on six key areas: financial services, retail, transportation, manufacturing, telecommunication and trade and local government. Enterprises, which are now using custom-built systems for its network of offices, plants anddistribution outlets, find it difficult to make one system communicate with another within the organisation. Desai said it would be difficult for them to have a standardised package that would enable faster and efficient delivery of all the inputs on a consistent basis.

If an enterprise wants to reimplement the systems, it will be difficult to adapt to the changing requirements, according to Desai. The limitation will have to give way to doing things with newer technologies like component-based systems which will help bring about integration in the IT spectrum of the enterprises. Many in the US are conscious of this and are moving to newer technologies.
