Motorola gears up for 2-way radio market

OUR CORPORATE BUREAU
NEW DELHI, July 19: Local companies facing the problem of the huge monthly airtime bills of cellphones are increasingly looking at other communication options. As a result, the use of two way radios has increased significantly in the recent past.

According to Harjeet Rekhi, senior market planner of Motorola India Ltd, the high cost of cellular phones, deter users in many segments. In contrast, two way radios are highly cost effective and offer the potential of unlimited usage to consumers, he said.

"Our company's strategy is to inform consumers about the multiple benefits of two way radio communication", said Rekhi adding that, Motorola India Limited, the world's leading provider of wireless communication had geared up plans to increase its market penetration in the emerging two way radio market in India.

Although the use of this technology is widespread, a large number of organisations in India are now beginning to tap its potential. Users include a large number of construction companies, transporters, hotels, courier services, export houses, event management outfits, besides medium and large sized manufacturing companies and television news channels. Two-way radio, better known as wireless sets or walkie-talkie, is a wireless communication device that operates on a given frequency for closed user group communication. All radios that are part of the same organisation are programmed on that frequency to communicate with each other.

For instance, a large company can stay in constant touch with key managers, sales and service teams, delivery operations and sites. Point to point management is possible as multiple channels of communication can be operated at one time.

In addition, every participant in the business process can be empowered with a radio, thereby increasing efficiency as well as ensuring coordinated work flows. Decision making time on the shop floor can also be reduced significantly so as to meet production targets. Two way radios offer instantaneous communication without the bother ofdialling, leaving messages and waiting of for a call back. Users just press a button to get connected to each other.

Motorola is focussing on the mass market for low cost commercial radio terminals. The company has established a state of the art facility in Bangalore for manufacturing a wide range of its two way radio products. At present the facility produces conventional and trunked two way mobiles, hand held transceivers, which are the world's most popular radio terminals.
