To begin with, the Zydus group will launch the hepatitis B vaccine branded, HB Vac and production is likely to commence from March 1999. The vaccine, which has been approved by the World Health Organisation, is currently marketed in 23 countries worldwide.

The joint venture deal also includes the transfer of technology for the manufacture of vaccines and the training of Zydus personnel. Both companies will also explore possibilities of launching new biological and diagnostic products in future. Plans are also afoot to introduce vaccines to prevent hepatitis A, rabies, pneumonia, mumps measles rubella and haemophilia influenza type B. The Zydus group is investing Rs 10 crore to set up a new vaccinefacility in the country.
