India accedes to Paris Convention
India has decided to accede to the Paris Convention for the protection of industrial property and Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). The accession to the Paris Convention and the PCT would enable India to play a more significant role in the determination of matters related to industrial property in the international fora and forcefully articulate its concerns on such issues.
Indian software bridges the Asian lingual gap
India plans to take a giant leap in the SAARC region with advanced multi-lingual multi-media information technology. India considers itself as the software giant in the region and with the system developed by C-DAC, it not only seeks to maintain a lead in the region and SAPTA market, but also aims at protecting the region from hegemonism of the West, particularly the US, by integrating the system and creating compatibility in language transmissions, much of which is a common heritage.
ADB may lend $150m to Gujarat for core projects
Asia Development Bank (ADB) is expected to lend an additional $150 million for infrastructural development in Gujarat by December 1998. The ADB had promised to give a loan of $1,000 million in phases for development in infrastructure like power and road construction in Gujarat, of which the state government had already received $100 million in 1996 and utilised it.
