Toyota Motor tops Japan firms rating
REUTERS
Tokyo, Aug 20: Toyota Motor Corp reported the highest income in 1997-98 among Japanese corporations, a credit research firm said on Thursday.Toyota reported income of 583.8 billion yen ($4.08 billion) to tax authorities in the year ended in March, down 21.7 per cent from the previous year, Teikoku Databank said. The only entity which had more income than Toyota was the Bank of Japan, which reported income of 931.1 billion yen, a jump of 58.7 per cent. The Bank of Japan was included in the survey as it is independent from the government and its shares are traded on the over-the-counter market. Teikoku Databank said the central bank's income rose due to the weaker yen and an increase in profits related to long-term government bonds. Toyota was followed by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp, which reported income of 255.4 billion yen, down 37.9 per cent.
