MUMBAI, Sept 16: Raids conducted by the income-tax department on two groups, engaged in the business of accepting deposits from public by offering exorbitant interest rates, have yielded undisclosed income of around Rs 5 crore.The department has also seized around Rs 2.5 crore cash from these groups. According to sources in the revenue department, the raids were conducted on August 14 and the investigation is still on.
The department raided Ahura Mazda Dairy Farm at Worli belonging to Viras Kanga resulted in seizure of cash of Rs 1.61 crore. Kanga has also admitted concealed income of Rs 3 crore.
He was reportedly accepting money from the public and offering an interest of 7.5 per cent per month. According to sources, the modus operandi involved taking money from one person and lending it to another at higher interest rate than the rate being offered to the first person.
According to sources, Kanga had formed a long chain of creditors and debtors and was minting money by taking commission from thisbusiness.
Similarly, another person JS Bhatt with his office at Borivali was raided. He was also said to be offering money-multiplying schemes with interest as high as 9 per cent per month. Bhatt has admitted an unconcealed income of Rs 2 crore, while Rs 1 crore has been already seized by the department.
Last year also the department had raided persons engaged in similar business. In one case, a BEST employee was running a money-lending business and admitted to have concealed an income of Rs 3 crore.
