Gujarat bandh evokes mixed reponse

Our Bureau

Ahmedabad, Sept 18: The `Gujarat bandh' call given by the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Party in protest against the Bharatiya Jananta Party (BJP) chief minister Keshubhai Patel's failure to check rising prices in the state, evoked a good response in cities and a mixed reaction in smaller towns.

Apprehending trouble, most of the small-scale industries, market places, banks, schools and colleges downed their shutters.

Meanwhile, the intensity of flash flood in Surat reduced on Friday. But, several industrial units, including the 645mw NTPC power plant, Kribhco fertiliser plant, Gujarat Gas, ONGC and IOC installations, and Hazira-Bijapur-Jagdishpur (HBJ) pipeline, still remained shut as they were submerged.

Life has been disrupted in several other towns in south and central Gujarat, including Baroda, Broach, besides Daman, due to heavy rain in the catchment areas of dams in different rivers upstream.
