Gazprom in stake talks with Ruhrgas

Reuters

OAO Gazprom has begun talks about having Germany's Ruhrgas AG buy a stake in the Russian natural gas supplier, a German newspaper reported last week.

Gazprom Chief Executive Rem Vyakhirev said the company has begun discussions about Ruhrgas buying a five per cent stake from the 40 per cent block the Russian government is likely to put up for sale, Die Welt reported.

However, Vyakhirev said he would not yet characterise the talks as concrete negotiations.

On Friday, Ruhrgas chief executive Friedrich Spaeth said buying into Gazprom was a possibility, if the Russian government were to decide to sell Gazprom stakes. Both companies said their plans depended on agreement by the new Russian government of Yevgeny Primakov, Die Welt reported.

Vyakhirev was in Germany to celebrate 25 years of Russian gas deliveries to Germany.
