Ashok B Sharma
The southwest monsoon will enormously benefit rabi crops by irrigating 10.178 million hectares of cultivable command areas (CCA) in the country through the present level of live storages in 63 major water reservoirs. The live storage in these major reservoirs is enough to generate 8555 MW hydel power in the country.

In Andhra Pradesh, live storage in Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar, Sriramsagar and Somasila will irrigate 1474 thousand hectares CCA and generate 1707 MW hydel power.

In Bihar, live storage in Tenughat, Maithon, Panchet Hill, Konar and Tilaiya reservoirs will generate 144 MW hydel power. In Gujarat the live storage in Ukai, Sabarmati (Dhardi), Kadana, Shetrunji and Bhadar reservoirs will 663 thousand hectre CCA and generate 420 MW hydel power. In Himachal Pradesh, the live storage in Gobind Sagar (Bhakra) and Pong Dam (Beas) will be able to irrigate 676 thousand hectre of CCA and generate 1560 MW hydel power.

In kerala, live storage in Kallaada (Parappar), Idukki and Idamalayar will be able to irrigate 139 thousand hectre of CCA and generate 855 MW hydel power. In Madhya Pradesh, live storage in Gandhi Sagar, Tawa, Bargi and Mahanadi will be able to irrigate about 1013 thousand hectre CCA and generate 220 MW hydel power.

In Maharashtra, live storages in Jayakwadi (Paithan), Koyana, Bhima (Ujjani), Isapur, Mula, Yeldari, Girna and Khadakyasla will irrigate 768 thousand hectre CCA and generate 888 MW hydel power. In Orissa, live storages in Hirakud, Balimela, Salandi, Rengali, Machkund (Jalaput) and Upper Kolab will irrigate 287 thousand hectre CCA and generate 1302 MW hydel power. In Rajasthan, live storages in Mahi Bajaj Sagar, Jhakam and Rana Pratap Sagar will irrigate 335 thousand hectre of CCA and generate 312 MW hydel power. In Tripura, live storage in Gumti will generate 15 MW hydel power. In UP, live storage in Matatila and Rihand will irrigate 1897 thousand hectre CCA and generate 498 MW hydel power. In West Bengal, live storages in Mayurakshi and Kangsabati will irrigate 568 thousand hectre CCA.

Floods, cyclone, landslides have also brought in untold devastations. About 32.64 lakh hectre of crop area has been washed away in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Meghalaya, , Punjab, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

In Bihar about 14.50 lakh hectre of crop area was damaged. In UP about 14 lakh hectre crop area is washed away by floods. On the whole the naturalcalamities caused due to monsoon took a toll of 3453 human lives, causing damages to 848248 houses, affecting 361.22 lakh people and 68.90 lakh hectre in 33766 villages in 183 districts of the country. Total animal lives lost is put at 71369.

MONSOON REVIEW & FORECAST:The recession of monsoon from the western end of Rajasthan which began behind schedule on September 6, has been stalled due to depression created near Udaipur on September 17. This depression moved westward and remained centred near Deesa in north Gujarat on September 18.

The low pressure area which lay over Orissa on September 9 was located over east MP and adjoining Bihar plateau on September 10 and remained stationary till September 13.

The system slowly moved westwards and concentrated into a depression with its centre close to Bhopal on September 14. It moved further westwards and was located near Ratlam in West Madhya Pradesh on September 16. This situation resulted in Orissa and east MP getting some rainfall in the previousweek. If the situation further improves both east MP and Orissa may have normal rainfall in the season.

FORECAST:Normal rainfall is likely over south, central, western and northwestern parts of the country.

Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at most places in Saurashtra, Kutch, west Rajasthan, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Rain or thundershowers are also expected at many places in Konkan, Goa, Gujarat region, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and coastal Orissa and at few places in Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, interior Orissa, MP, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Karnataka, Kerala and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

ONGC PLANT AFFECTED:Due to torrential rains in the catchment area of river Tapti and release of water from Ukal Dam vast areas in and around Surat have been flooded with 5-8 ft water. Consequently ONGC plant, POL/LPG terminals of the industry and IOC/BPC's depots at Surat have been rendered non-operational.
