The total value of mineral production, excluding atomic and minor minerals, in the country during July increased to Rs 2973 crore from Rs 2955 crore in June. The contribution of coal is the highest at Rs 1310 crore accounting for almost 44 per cent. While petroleum (crude) contributed Rs 905 crore, natural gas's (utilised) share was Rs 335 crore.Iron ore's share was Rs 123 crore while lignite and limestone contributed Rs 82 crore and Rs 75 crore respectively.
Production levels of important minerals in July are as follows: coal 223 lakh tonnes, petroleum (crude) 29 lakh tonnes, natural gas (utilised) 17350 lakh cu.m., iron ore 47 lakh tonnes, lignite 1948000 tonnes, manganese ore 121000 tonnes, chromite 111000 tonnes, bacuxide 468000 tonnes, copper ore 404000 tonnes, gold 192 kg, lead contrate 5662 tonnes, zinc concentrate 353 tonnes, limestone 91 lakh tonnes, apatite and phosphatic 121000 tonnes, dolamite 235000 tonnes and magnesite 29000 tonnes.
During July, production of bauxite increased by 40 percent, copper ore and gold 16 per cent each respectively, natural gas (utilised) 7 per cent, petroleum (crude) 5 per cent, magnesite 4 per cent, and lignite 2 per cent in comparison with the previous The output of chromite decreased by 17 per cent while the production of iron ore and lead concentrate 12 per cent each.
The output of limestone decreased by 7 per cent, dolomite 5 per cent, coal and zinc concentrate 2 per cent each, manganese ore and apatite and phosphorite 1 per cent each.
The index number of mineral production in July 1998 works out to 119 as compared with 117 in July. This showed that the mineral production as a whole in July increased by 2 per cent as compared with production recorded in June.
