Mumbai, Sept 26: Carryforward rates on the Bombay Stock Exchange continued to remain high for the second week in a row and hovered around 17-18.5 per cent on an annualised basis compared with 21 per cent in the previous settlement. "Carryforward rates came down marginally as a large number of badla financers were present in the market expecting higher rates," a BSE broker said. "A number of investors had squared up their positions in the week itself as they had expected higher carryforward rates. Thus, the number of long positions was relatively low," he added.During the week, the BSE saw a reversal of trends, mainly due to the boosted market sentiments of the world markets, notably Hong Kong, Tokyo and New York. Market participants said that positive sentiment also prevailed as the finance minister made a statement that necessary amendments to the Companies Act were being worked out to introduce share buyback. His other announcement that PSU shares would be sold to retail investors at a discount attractedthe bulls to take long-term positions in the index-based scrips, which pushed the market up.
Some of the scrips that attracted undha badla were Bhel, Satyam Computers, Britannia Industries, Carrier Aircon, CESC, Exide Industries, Hero Honda, HLL, Indian Hotels, ITC Hotel and Ranbaxy Laboratories.
Bajaj Auto attracted an annualised carryforward rate of 2.26 per cent, BPL 5.45 per cent, ACC 17 per cent, Burroughs Welcome 10.19 per cent, BSES 6.26 per cent, Castrol 5.24 per cent, Dabur 9.31 per cent, Digital Equipment 58 per cent, German Remedies 19.45 per cent, ITC 5.12 per cent, NIIT 18 per cent, Pentafours Software 5.37 per cent, Punjab Tractors 17 per cent and Zee Telefilms attracted an annualised carryforward rate of 6.98 per cent.
During the week, the total turnover on the BSE rose by Rs 1,013.71 crore to Rs 6,919.73 crore against the previous week's Rs 5,906.02 crore.
On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the S&P CNX Nifty gained by 33.30 points to 934.95 points from last Friday's close of 901.65points. Total turnover on the NSE went up by Rs 1,226.71 crore to Rs 7,907.96 crore against last week's turnover of Rs 6,581.25 crore.
The week ended September 25 saw some of the scrips surge like Bajaj Auto gained by Rs 41.25 to Rs 690, Bhel by Rs 43.90 to Rs 298.50, Dr Reddy by Rs 88.25 to Rs 501, Glaxo by Rs 45.75 to Rs 473.25, Hero Honda by Rs 77.25 to Rs 652.75 and HLL by Rs 44 to Rs 1,684.75. ITC, which was the market mover, rose by Rs 57.20 to close the week at Rs 710.75.
