Vajpayee holds talks with Akali Dal leaders to allay misgivings

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
New Delhi, Oct 3: Prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has initiated a dialogue with the Akali leadership to allay the misgivings of the Akali Dal on the Udam Singh Nagar and other issues.

Stating this, BJP spokesman Kishan Lal Sharma, MP, told newspersons here on Saturday that ``there is no danger to the Vajpayee government.''

The Shiromoni Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) president GS Tohra and Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Friday had threatened that the party might ``withdraw support'' to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government at the centre if it did not respect the party's sentiments about keeping the Udham Singh Nagar district out of the proposed state of Uttarachal.

Sharma said the Bharatiya Janata Party attached utmost important to the support of the Akali Dal and was sensitive to its senti-ments. ``The prime minister is seized of the matter,'' he said.

Sharma asserted that the issues involved would be amicably settled with the Akali leadership through discussionsand dialogue. ``If Cauvery issue could be sorted out amicably there is no issue that cannot be resolved similarly,'' he commented.

Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party president Kushabhau Thakre had said the ``majority view'' of the people of Udham Singh Nagar was in favour of remaining in Uttaranchal.

Thakre said the Uttar Pradesh govern-ment also was of the same view as Udham Singh Nagar was earlier part of the Nainital district, which in turn was part of the proposed state.
