Cardamom prices touch Rs 670 a kg at auction

Mumbai, Oct 12: Cardamom fetched an average price of Rs 437.66 a kg while black pepper was sold at Rs 239.82 per kg in the second auction of season 1998-99 held at the Agriculture Produce Market Commission (APMC) yard in Navi Mumbai last week.

A total quantity of 5014.700 kg cardamom was offered at the auction while the 1607 kg of black pepper was offered. However, 733.600 kg of cardamom was withdrawn as the quoted price was below the benchmark price. All the black pepper offered was sold at the auction.

The total value of cardamom sales was Rs 18,73,646.70 while that of black pepper was Rs 3,85,389. The maximum price offered for cardamom was Rs 670 a kg whereas the minimum price offered was Rs 241 a kg. The maximum and minimum prices for black pepper were Rs 350 and Rs 238 per kg respectively.

Arrival of Tata Tea 2523.700 kg of cardamom. Vaikundam Rubber and Produce Co Ltd offered 1000.900 kg of cardamom while AVT group of companies offered 1184.400 kg.

The total quantity offered at the first auctionof the season, held last week, was 3460 kg of cardamom and 898 kg black pepper out of which 439.800 kg cardamom was withdrawn as the price quoted was less than the benchmark price.

The average price for cardamom and black pepper worked out to Rs 474.43 and Rs 230.67 a kg respectively.

The first ever auctions in Mumbai were held on October 23. Subsequently 24 more auctions were held. Against the total fresh arrivals of 91,703 kg of cardamom, 81,806 kg was auctioned fetching an average price of Rs 312.97 per kilogram.

Accordingly eight auctions for black pepper were held last year which fetched an average price of Rs 223.99 per kg. The quantity sold was 9368 kg against the arrivals of 9936 kg.

Perfect Cardamom and Spices Company, the agency that conducts auctions at Navi Mumbai expects to auction 1.25 lakh kg of cardamom this year, the company's managing director Mayur Desai informed.
