Kothari schemes outperform benchmark indices

New Delhi, Oct 13: All three equity schemes of Kothari Pioneer Mutual Fund - Bluechip Fund, Prima Plus and Prima Fund - have outperformed their respective indices in the quarter ended September 30, 1998.

A steady growth open fund, Kothari Pioneer Bluechip's NAV has appreciated by 9.75 per cent against a 4.57 per cent fall in the BSE Sensex during the quarter ended September 30. As on September 30, Bluechip's NAV stood at Rs 18.57. In September, the fund's NAV appreciated by 5.87 per cent against 5.74 per cent rise in the BSE Sensex.

Prima Plus, the other open-end equity scheme with a maximum load of 3 per cent, has risen by 7.76 per cent during the quarter ended September 30, against a 0.23 per cent drop in S&P CNX 500. The latest NAV of Prima Plus as on September 30, stood at Rs 9.44. The quarter performance of Prima Plus is attributed to its holdings in FMCG and healthcare stocks which are doing well. Prima Plus has booked profit in Cummins India as the stock appreciated considerably in the past onemonth. Ramco Industries is the new addition to its portfolio.

Prima Fund, an aggressive growth open-end equity fund with a maximum load of 3 per cent, has seen its NAV appreciating by 12.61 per cent during the quarter ended September 30, 1998 against a 0.23 per cent fall in S&P CNX 500 during the same period. The fund's latest NAV is Rs 11.6. In September, Prima's NAV rose by 9.52 per cent against 5.67 per cent rise in S&P CNX. The fund has increased its exposure to BFL Software and added two stocks - Hoechst Agrevo and Monsanto Chemicals - to its portfolio in September. Now, BFL Software accounts for 4.48 per cent of the total assets of Prima Fund.Explaining the investment philosophy of these funds, Vivek Reddy, chief executive, Kothari Pioneer AMC, said, ``Superior fund management has less to do with understanding companies and industry as they are today and more to do with how they will perform tommorrow. Our effort is to observe significant global as well as domestic changes and capitalise on themearly.''

The Bluechip's exposure to equity is around 93 per cent of the total assets. The top 10 holdings of Bluechip as on September 30, are Satyam Computer (11.88 per cent of the total assets), NIIT (7.65 per cent), Infosys (7.49 per cent), Digital Equipment (6.86 per cent), MTNL (6.61 per cent), TVS Suzuki (6.39 per cent), SBI (4.67 per cent), Pfizer (4.65 per cent), Bajaj Auto (4.51 per cent) and HDFC (4.42 per cent).

Almost 98 per cent of Prima Plus's corpus is invested in equity shares. Top 10 holdings of Prima Plus include Infosys (8.72 per cent), Satyam Computer (7.23 per cent), MTNL (5.65 per cent), Wipro (4.42 per cent), HPCL (3.84 per cent), BPCL (3.8 per cent), Tata Infotech (3.49 per cent), HDFC (3.39 per cent), NIIT (3.08 per cent) and Mastek (2.87 per cent).

Prima Fund's exposure to equity is 96.65 per cent of its total assets. The fund's investment is in mid and small cap shares. Prima Fund's top 10 holdings are Satyam Computer (8.1 per cent), E Merck (6.27 per cent), Parry Confectionery(5.65 per cent), HDFC (5.07 per cent), BFL Software (4.48 per cent), Marico Industries (4.26 per cent), Madras Refineries (4.19 per cent), Mastek (3.7 per cent), Pfizer (3.68 per cent) and LA Components (3.37 per cent).
