Calcutta, Oct 15: The Calcutta Port Trust has earned Rs 3.05 crore till August this year from ship-breaking activities at some abandoned coal berths. The income came from port charges for 15 ships scrapped in the Calcutta Dock System, Another six are being dismantled while five are waiting at the dock. With more ships expected to arrive over the next few weeks, the CPT expects to play host to 30 vessels at its makeshift scrapyard this year, the highest in its history. CPT sources said the port expects to earn over Rs 8 crore from the ship-breaking berths in the full year.
They pointed out that scrapping of vessels is usually done in a separate zone near the sea where junked ships can be beached at high tide, and not at the port itself. But CPT decided to use its coal berths for the purpose as all coal imports are now landed at Haldia port further downstream.
