Gail begins production at Usar project: The Gas Authority of India Ltd (Gail) has commenced production, on an experimental basis, at its gas-recovery project at Usar near Alibag in Maharashtra. The Rs 320-crore project, supplying gas to the adjoining Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), will be bottled and marketed as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by the latter, plant deputy general manager SP Selvam said. However, Usar being a backward area is prone to power failure which is likely to affect the functioning of the project, he added.Upper Ganges Sugar posts net loss in first half: KK Birla group firm Upper Ganges Sugar & Industries has reported a net loss of Rs 2.52 crore on net sales of Rs 96.58 crore during the six months to September 30, 1998. Gross profit for the period stood at Rs 0.65 crore, while interest burden was Rs 10.56 crore. Sales in the second quarter of 1998-99 were higher at Rs 48.99 crore, compared with Rs 40.49 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.Net loss for the second quarter increased to Rs 3.45 crore from Rs 1.54 crore in the same period last year.
Gobind Sugar Mills H1 net loss at Rs 7 crore: Gobind Sugar Mills, the KK Birla group firm, has reported a net loss of Rs 7.17 crore on net sales of Rs 35.64 crore during the six months to September 30, 1998. The gross loss was Rs 5.67 crore. Interest cost accounted for Rs 5.90 crore. In 1997-98, sales and net profit were Rs 70.69 crore and Rs 1.62 crore.
New India Sugar H1 net at Rs 0.49 crore: New India Sugar Mills Ltd has reported a profit of Rs 0.49 crore on net sales of Rs 7.25 crore in the first half of 1998-99. The KK Birla group firm's gross profit stood at Rs 0. 74 crore and interest cost Rs 0.50 crore. In 1997-98, sales and net profit were Rs 28.15 crore and Rs 62.79 lakh respectively.
