October 18: The incessant heavy rains have washed away the shrimp ponds in the costal districts of Andhra Pradesh causing the industry a loss of approximately Rs 100 crore, according to industry sources. According to the unofficial reports from districts, about 60,000 acres engaged in prawn culture along the coast in the state have already been submerged in flood waters.After the supreme court's direction on the Coastal Regulatory Zone, controlling aqua farming along the coastal lines, the corporates have withdrawn from the farming activity while the small farmer continued the farming on an extensive scale. At a time, when these farms are recuperating from the losses incurred due to viral disease, the floods have inflicted major blow to the small farmers in the area. A majority of farmers are exporting raw prwans from costal districts covering Krishna, West Godavari, Prakasam and Nellore, where extensive culture is being practiced.
According to the industry sources, about 30 per cent of the ponds inthese districts have 30 to 40 count shrimps which are ready for harvest. While about 20 per cent of the ponds have just stocked the seed, the source said.According to revenue sources, in Machilipatnam, Krishna district, about 4,350 acres have been submerged due to heavy rains.
