Mumbai, Nov 7: The Rs 84-crore Infar India plans to set up a new state-of-the-art formulations manufacturing facility in Calcutta. Infar is, however, awaiting the clearance of its Dutch parent company Akzo Nobel on the pollution front, before firming up finer details. The new facility would form part of the multinational's five-year plan to invest Rs 100 crore in the Indian sub-continent.
Infar India joint managing director F Burmeister told The Financial Express that details on the quality, design, size and investment of the proposed new formulations' plant were currently under discussion and could be finalised only once the parent company's high standards on the pollution front were met.
Burmeister said that the new facility which will essentially service the Indian market may also be used to meet the demands of Asian markets like Indonesia. Infar reportedly plans to share a 25-acre site in Calcutta for its proposed facility with the south-based Apollo group.
Meanwhile, Infar has also launched thelightest pill for contraception branded Femilon in India. The product contains only 20mcg of estrogen which is 33-38 per cent lighter than all other mini pills for contraception.
Priced at Rs 60, the product has been well-accepted in the country. Around 600 Indian women have already been using Femilon and Infar has been monitoring the drug's effectiveness.
The company is targeting a 15-per cent share of the Rs 29-crore Indian oral contraceptive market.
Burmeister said that the company also plans to a "single road contraception implant, Implanon, and is just finalising the clinical development of a new contraceptive vaginal ring.
Burmeister was addressing the press on the occasion of the completion of 75 years of existence of Organon. Organon represents the multi-billion guilder pharmaceutical business of Akzo Nobel and is the pioneer in the fields of gynaecology, psychiatry, cardiovascular diseases and immunology.
Infar which began its operations as Organon in India way back in 1962, operatesthrough eight regional offices. With over 800 employees, Infar India has three production units in Ganganagar and Calcutta in West Bengal and Mehsana in the western state of Gujarat.
