Reliance official Balasubramanian booked in Delhi

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Nov 9: Delhi police have registered a case under the Official Secrets Act against Reliance Industries group president V Balasubramanian, following alleged recovery of "top secret" documents at his Delhi office.

The case, which was registered at the Parliament Street police station on Friday, was on Monday transferred to the crime branch of the New Delhi police, sources said.

Meanwhile, Balasubramanian's advocate Madhukar Goyal said in a statement: "The matter is under investigation. My client would like to clarify that no such papers were found during searches conducted at his residence or office."While the nature of the "incriminating documents" recovered from Balasubramanian's office was not known, a top police official said, "They were not supposed to be with a private person."

Police sources said the documents seized included "minutes of some important meetings"."They (the documents seized) might not be very vital or even relevant today, but the important thing is that it should not havebeen with him," they said.

The crime branch will probe how "top secret documents" got into Balasubramanian's hands.Balasubramanian was questioned by the police on Sunday in connection with his alleged links with Romesh Sharma, suspected to be a front man of dubai-based underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, the Congress has taken exception to union home minister LK Advani's `trial by innuendo' against party leaders and `selective exoneration' of Delhi chief minister Sushma Swaraj in the case of Romesh Sharma.Spokesman Mani Shankar Aiyar accused Advani of trying to `scuttle' the Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the Romesh Sharma case .
