Novo Nordisk sets up local enzymes outfit

Bangalore, Nov 11: The Denmark-based $3-billion Novo Nordisk A/S has floated its second outfit in the country. Based in Bangalore, Novo Nordisk Enzymes India Pvt Ltd is headed by G Krishnamurthy, who has been appointed managing director.

The new entity will market enzymes, which are being imported from Denmark, catering to food processing, beverage and textile industry. Enzymes speed up the manufacturing process of the companies involved in these industry segment.

The company, at present, does not plan to set up a manufacturing unit in the country. "The major focus area is to enhance market awareness about the company's products in India," said senior officials in Novo Nordisk Pharma India Ltd. However, Krishnamurthy was not available for comment.

Novo Nordisk Pharma India is the first subsidiary of the Novo Nordisk group in the country. It was set up in 1994 in Bangalore as a joint venture between two arms of the parent company.

Worldwide, Novo Nordisk has two divisions - healthcare and enzymes.While the healthcare division offers anti-diabetes drugs, the other unit manufactures and markets enzymes.

Novo Nordisk Pharma India managing director Anil Kapur said: "Commanding a marketshare of 88 per cent in the domestic insulin market, the company now plans to unveil oral treatment for diabetes. Clinical trials in India for this new compound are underway."

Yet another product from the company's stable likely to hit the market this December is the disposable insulin administrative device. The company, at present, has strategic alliances with -- Torrent Pharmaceuticals and Knoll group - in India.

While Torrent manufactures Novo products, Knoll is the sole distributor in the country. "We may also begin exports to neighbouring countries at a later stage," Kapur said.

The company also seeks to expand its existing manpower with an emphasis on strengthening its sales force. It has also earmarked substantial investments for creating awareness about diabetes. During the last fiscal the company posted aturnover of Rs 65 crore from its India operations.

Novo Nordisk Education Foundation is discussing a tie-up with New Castle University of Australia to develop diabetes education courses using the problem based learning concept. These courses will be offered to Indian doctors.

The foundation also plans to initiate a life science research award to be given for every year to a young Indian scientist for outstanding contribution to life science.
