Toying with green to make big bucks

Jyoti Mukul
New Delhi, Nov 14: Next time you scold a child for tearing sheets from his notebook and scribbling on it, just tell him: "Don't throw away waste paper. You can recycle it." Recycling is simple and so is making cloth on a loom.Toyin Woodcrafts India is helping parents to introduce children to these concepts in their formative years through its easy-to-use kits.

Toyin has recently set up a shop in New Delhi's Greater Kailash market. Though in business of wooden toys since 1980, the company had confined itself to exports. "We decided to diversify into the domestic market by setting up the shop," says S K Bose who manages the shop and is one of the directors of the company.

The one-stop wood shop has toys for all age groups. From pull-alongs to educational toys, care has been taken to add new elements to each of them. For instance, a scale familiarises a child with 12 types of wood. Literature along with the scale explains what use each wood can be put to.

Since Toyin entered the export market prior to thedomestic, all its products conform to standards laid down by TUV, Germany. "Our toys do not have sharp edges or nails and metals which can hurt a child. The polish used is non-toxic. Even strings used in pull-alongs are kept short so that the child cannot tie it around his neck. These standards make toys completely safe for children."

Besides toys, Toyin makes wooden furniture, like folding tables and chairs, which range from Rs 550 to 2,000. They are designed to save space and not weigh much.
