New Delhi, Nov 17: India has imposed anti-dumping duty on theophylline and caffeine imports from China. The designated authority for anti-dumping has fixed the duty on theophylline at Rs 372 a kilogram and on caffeine at Rs 371 a kilogram. The duty was made definitive after the authority in the commerce ministry reviewed a July 26, 1995 decision to impose provisional duties.Anti-dumping proceedings on theophylline and caffeine imports were initiated after complaints were lodged by the domestic industry, led by Kores (India) Ltd, Bakul Aromatics & Chemicals Ltd, and Suven Pharma Ltd.
With neither Chinese exporters nor local importers of these goods responding to the designated authority's notice, the dumping margin was concluded to be 99.55 per cent for theophylline and 111.94 per cent for caffeine.
The authority concluded that if anti-dumping duty was to be withdrawn, it would cause material injury to the domestic industry. The authority issued the order via a notification on November 12,1998.
