Empower SEBI
The securities market regulator lacks teeth. That was the crux of a recent presentation to the press made by SEBI. The SEBI top brass pointed out that one of the reasons why the regulator failed to live up to the expectations of the press or the public was their lack of powers.
Prop venture capital
While notifying the amendment to Section 372 of the Companies Act, the centre missed a golden opportunity to relax the provisions of this section for venture capital. Small companies which need venture capital often have to be funded in full, and having restrictions on inter-corporate investments in them makes no sense.
The hand that rocks communists' cradle
What was said is far less important than what really happened. And what happened is that it was Jyoti Basu who was chosen to deliver the Nehru Memorial Lecture. That it was Sonia Gandhi who chose him. That Soniaji and Basu shared the platform recognising their mutual usefulness.
