Sarovar Park Plaza bags award: This year's World Travel Market Global Award for south Asia has been bagged by an Indian hotel chain. Sarovar Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts, the promoters of Mumbai's Marine Plaza hotel, were given the award in London. This puts the company in the league of British Airways, Intercontinental Hotels and Jet Airways. These companies are former winners of the award.

P&G to unveil new, improved Whisper: Procter & Gamble India will launch the new, improved Whisper sanitary napkins to mark the brand's 10th anniversary in India. The new product will have two significant improvements: it will be thicker affording greater absorbency, and the adhesive has been increased to help the napkin stay in place. Under the `special consumer offer' a pack of six for Rs 20, and a pack of 30 for Rs 99 will be available throughout the country.

Mirza Tanners to set up Rs 20cr shoe plant: The Kanpur-based Mirza Tanners Ltd, a leading shoe manufacturer and exporter, is setting up aRs 20 crore plant at Noida with a production capacity of one million pairs of polyurethane (PU) shoes per annum. The entire plant will be imported from Italy and production is expected to begin in January 1999, company joint managing director Rashid Mirza said.

Polysindo sets up software venture: The $2.5-billion Indonesian group Polysindo has incorporated an export-oriented software company in Chennai as a subsidiary to Beacon Holdings & Investments Ltd. The new company, Beacon Software Systems Ltd, is in talks with the Singapore-based software arm of the multinational group to finalise areas of specialisation, sources at Polysindo's indian flaghship Best & Crompton Engg Ltd said. The firm will begin operations upon receiving certificate for commencement of business from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) and planned to employ about 50 software professionals initially, the sources said.

Trai consultation paper: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) will release a consultation paperon "Maintenance of Register for Interconnection" on the first day of the open house discussions on December 3 in Mumbai. The paper discusses the content of an interconnect agreement, the international practices thereof, the mode of dissemination of information, levy of fee for accessing information and other issues for consideration. This document has been prepared to seek opinion from operators and other interested agencies before finalising the regulations.
