Ahmedabad, Dec 6: Intechmart Gujarat '98, concluded on Sunday with signing of over 70 memoranda of understanding (MoU) between foreign and domestic companies for assorted projects worth $2.87 billion (Rs 11,000 crore) to be set up in Gujarat. The bulk of the capital-intensive projects, numbering 22, were related to infrastructure development, a dozen were of unspecified investment, a few for exploration of further ties and the remaining 30 for small and medium scale entreprises (SMEs).Unocal Bharat Ltd, Indian arm of the US-based company, signed an MoU with Gujarat industrial investment corporation (GIIC) for a 1000 mw LNG-based power plant at a cost of Rs 3,800 crores, Unocal signing another MoU with National Telecom of India Ltd (Natelco) for development of Maroli port costing Rs 1,200 crores, Dutch company Haskoning BV signing up with JK Organisation for developing Dholera port to handle 8 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) at a cost of Rs 750 crores. Another mega projects is expansion of jetties at Dahejport in south Gujarat for which an Mou was signed between Indo-British consortium of Backet Rankine, Edmand Nuttal and L&T Port Management Services with Dahej Harbour and Infrastructure (a unit of Indo Gulf Fertiliser and Chemicals Corporation Ltd), involving an investment of Rs 250 crores for phase-I and Rs 350 crores for phase-II.
Among the Canadian companies, Nalley's Group, having one-third world market share in food packets, signed a tripartite MoU with Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation (GAIC) and Das Group for a grassroot plant to produce 20,000 tpa of potato flakes from select grade potato to be grown on 1,500 hectares Dastan farm owned by Pranlal Bhogilal. A significant MoU was signed between Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce (establised in 1873 in Manitoba) and CII (established 1895) for greater exchange of two-way trade and commerce.
Singapor-based Madhukrish International has signed up with Gujarat Anjan to set up a cement plant in Kutch at a cost of Rs 360 crores, so has JTC International, alsoof Sinagapore, with GIIC for a number of infrastructure projects of unspecified sums.
Among the UK-based companies, Motherwell has signed an MoU with GCPTCL, a Gujarat government undertaking, for providing low temperature storage capacity at a cost of Rs 100 crores, and Kravener signing up with the same GCPTCL providing 1.75 mtpa cargo handling capacity at Cambay at a cost of Rs 15 crores.
Anjreena Group has signed up MoU with GIIC for 250-bed multi-speciality hospital at a cost of Rs 50 crores, with Patel Mines Pvt Ltd for export of granites and other items worth Rs 24 crores, with Krishna Plastics for manufacturing moulds, and with Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation (GAIC) for an agro park. From Japan, Marubeni has signed with Gujarat Cipromet Ltd for providing equipment to produce non-ferrous metal pipes and rods, besides Sumitomo Bank signing an MoU with GIIC and Gujarat Infrastructure Development Corporation (GIDB) for many infrastructure projects with a cap of US$ 1 billion. The three-day mart,jointly hosted by United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Union Ministry of Industry, Gujarat government's industrial extension bureau (iNDEXTb) and CII Gujarat chapter, had initially set the stage for signing 158 MoUs worth Rs US$ 3.5 bilion.
