Proper distribution system can help save power, says Central Rly official

Our Infrastructure Bureau
Mumbai, Dec 19: Power transmission and distribution system losses can be reduced by careful installation and selection of distribution system. A significant amount of power can be saved if suitable electrical equipment are selected, said RK Sapre, chief electrical engineer, Central Railway, at the seminar on Electrical System here on Friday. The two-day seminar was organised by the Institute of Energy Management.

Even by installing the appropriate distribution transformer alone a lot of energy can be saved, he said, adding that it is important considering the present shortage of power supply.

"In spite of all efforts, electricity generation has not been able to keep pace with demand," he said.

Availability of power being the major aspect for industrial development, efficient use of power is equally important as the generation of additional capacity, he added.

Identifications of operating conditions such as radiation, level of noise, shock, vibration, temperature is also essential to for theoptimum application of equipment.

There is a lack of efficient load management to monitor of overloading of transformers which is often the case in the country.

Power station and distribution network designer should consider factors such as losses involved, operation and maintenance costs and the advantage of placing the distribution centers in the vicinity of the consumers at the design stage itself, said Sapre.

"Any negligence in the design, selection or upkeep of equipment will not only result in poor performance of industrial plants but can also cause serious hazards," said S Narisetti, president, Institute of Energy Management.

Improved distribution network is also essential for better quality of power and to avoid disruptions, said experts.
