TNT Express plans to beef up country network

Aparna Kalra
NEW DELHI, JAN 3: Imagine if you could boast a client list which included the prime minister of India? TNT Express Worldwide India, the express courier company, claims this distinction.

The company flies a range of goods, ranging from a one-page document to a half-a-tonne parcel of export consignments anywhere in the world. Of course, customers have to pay in line with the time constraint.

TNT Worldwide, which set-up shop in the country in 1993, has plans to increase its network to 23 offices in 16 cities by the end of this year. Its target is to be number one or two in the Rs 300-crore-a-year market for express courier services in the country.

"We are the only courier company which changes its services to suit clients. Our customised services are well-known in the industry," says Ajay Kaul, head of sales and marketing, TNT India. TNT India once rushed an important document to prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on one of his foreign visits. "It was obviously our reputation which got us the job," Kaulsaid.

The company also offers branded services, Priority, Elite and Global Gold. TNT's front-end employees remain armed with passports and visas to a number of countries. For the company's tailor-made services, TNT employees physically rush to different destinations to ensure safe delivery of documents and parcels. "We even accept ten-hour limits on deliveries" says Kaul.

TNT India has a 51 per cent ownership of TNT Worldwide, while 49 per cent stake in the Indian subsidiary is owned by Redington, a private local company. TNT Express Worlwide, with a turnover of $ 5 billion, is owned by KPN, the Dutch postal and telecommunications corporation.

TNT plans to increase its presence in cities which have high export turnovers. It is also planning new services to cater to its growing client needs. The services include Mail Fast - an international bulk-mail service being favoured by corporators.
