Pune, Jan 25: The US-based Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation (CTS) opened up its seventh software development centre in the country in Pune. "The investments committed in the first five years is Rs 100 crore and a similar amount of investment will be made over the next three years," president and chief operating officer Lakshmi Naryan said here on Monday. During 1997-98, CTS registered a 143 per cent growth rate in India with exports worth Rs 113 crore. The growth this year is expected to be 100 per cent.CTS already has four development centres in Chennai and two in Calcutta. Earlier CTS was part of the Dun & Bradstreet Corporation. It is now an independent software company with a market capitalisation of Rs 1,000 crore. Dun and Bradstreet still accounts for 25 per cent of CTS's business. Other major customers include AC Neilsen Media, Pacific Stock Exchange and Aetna Insurance. The firm provide software services including application development, maintenance outsourcing and product support,rehosting and reengineering, Y2K conversion and testing and quality assurance.
Inaugurating the centre, founder chairman and chief executive officer of the New Jersey-headquartered CTS Kumar Mahadeva said the company would be focusing on services. "Services is a better business than products and we believe that future industry growth is in the service business". The company will also not be looking at the domestic market. The Pune centre will be providing solutions in the areas of internet technology and componentware for the export market.
CTS plans to grow the Pune facility to 250 software professionals over the next 12 months and to 500 in two years time. Diretor-in-charge of Pune operations Milind Padhye said a 11,500 square feet office was already in operation and the company plans to acquire another 11,500 square feet office space.
"There is a considerable pool of expertise in new software technology in Pune and we plan to grow the centre rapidly in the next two years", Padhye said.
