Russia takes IMF chief to task

AFP
Moscow, Mar 3 : Russian economy supremo Yurymaslyukov has accused International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Michel Camdessus of putting "indecent" pressure on Russia during the two sides' most recent financial relief talks.

"He pressures us, but that is simply indecent," the Russian first deputy Prime Minister was yesterday quoted as saying by Interfax."Camdessus wants to score an easy victory and make us do something that we will not accept," Maslyukov added. The communist's tough comments came in response to the IMF director's announcement on Monday that he was dissatisfied with Russia's economic strategies. Camdessus said Russia's 1999 budget was unrealistic and did not merit the release of a favourable new loan. Russia desperately hopes to secure a new IMF loan that would help cover a 4.5 billion dollar payment Russia owes to the fund this year. Moscow is due to make some 17.5 billion dollars in payments to foreign creditors this year but only a small fraction of that amount is factored intothe 1999 budget.
