UB Breweries plans to hike Kalyani unit's capacity

Our Corporate Bureau
Kalyani, Mar 17: Liquor baron Vijay Mallya's Kalyani unit of UB Breweries Ltd is planning to hike its capacity for beer production to 24 lakh bottles per month from the existing production level of 18 lakh bottles.

According to general manager of the Kalyani unit, Jayant Basu, the capacity expansion is expected within a time-frame of 12 to 18 months.

This unit, which became a part of UB group in 1973, has been recently awarded the ISO 9002 certification. The plant was set up in collaboration with Skoda of Croatia (formerly known as Czechoslovakia).

Commercial production began in 1965 and following a merger in 1993, this plant became a unit of UB Breweries Ltd. This plant manufactures Kalyani Black Label, Kalyani Black Label Strong, Kingfisher for the domestic market and Tajmahal Lager Beer for the US market.

Kalyani Black Label and Kingfisher are the two flagship brands of this unit. The UB group has cornered 40 per cent of the total market share of the beer industry, a company release said.

Around70 per cent of the total production capacity of the Kalyani unit is dedicated for Kalyani Black Label and the rest is mainly for Kalyani Black Label Strong and Kingfisher. Basu pointed out that during the lean period between November and February each year, out of the total production capacity of 18 lakh bottles per month, around 13.2 lakh bottles are sold. The unsold beer of these four months is sold during the peak season between March and October.
