NEW DELHI, Apr 8: A delegation of the Indian Newspaper Society headed by Mammen Mathew, managing director of Malayalam Manorama and the society's president, met Prime Minister Vajpayee and discussed the major areas of concern of the newspaper industry. A society release says the concerns included inadequate relief in the rates for DAVP advertisements. Many newspapers are facing a financial crunch owing to large outstanding arrears of payments for advertisements released by DAVP.
The 5 per cent customs duty levy on import of glazed newsprint proposed in the budget has also adversely affected the industry.
The move to bring about changes in the Press Council Act, 1978, giving sweeping powers to PCI, also concerns the newspaper industry.
