Coimbatore cotton prices down on lower mill demand

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Coimbatore, Apr 23: With sluggish demand from mills, the cotton lint prices generally witnessed a decline during the first fortnight of April.

Despite good arrivals, the lots were not of required quality and mills were unable to improve their cash flow due to non-movement of finished goods and yarn, the south India Cotton Association said in its market report for the period.

With less arrivals in mandis and negligible offtake from mills, lint prices continued to be steady in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat belts. Bengal deshi was being quoted at Rs 1,350 to rs 1,490 and j-34 saw ginned at Rs 1,630 to Rs 1,720 per maund spot, the report said.

Gujarat varieties shankar-6 ruled at Rs 19,500 and V-797 quoted at Rs 11,800 per candy spot, while H-4 of Madhya Pradesh was ruling at Rs 17,800 per candy spot during the period.

Maharashtra Cotton Federation has reduced the prices twice by Rs 200. With procurement crossing over 20 lakh bales, enquiries from mills were not that encouraging in the state, itsaid.

While the price remained easy in Andhra Pradesh, it was quiet in Karnataka and easy in Tamil Nadu following insignificant demand from the mills, the report said.
