NEW DELHI, Apr 28: The manufacturing units of Indian Railways have exceeded production targets set for the year 1998-99.The Chittaranjan Locomotive Works produced 165 electric locomotives, which was same as the previous year, against a target of 153. The target for 1998-99 was low since it is usually fixed in accordance with the fund allocation for production. However, according to Railway Board sources, the units were able to exceed target by diverting funds meant for other purposes to production.
The Integral Coach factory, Perambur, produced 1057 coaches against a target of 1050. In 1997-98, the unit produced 1010 fully-furnished coaches including 164 EMUs, 70 diesel multiple units and 40 main-line EMUs.
The Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, also exceeded the target of 1087 by producing 1057 coaches. It produced 1031 coaches during 1997-98.
The Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi achieved the target by producing 161 diesel locomotives during 1998-99. It was three numbers below the previousyear's.
The Wheel and Axle Plant, Bangalore, produced 99,688 wheels against a target of 95,000 and 51,055 axles against a target of 50,000. During 1997-98, the plant produced 92,015 wheels and 52,249 axles.
Diesel Component Works, Patiala, also exceeded its target during 1998-99 by re-building 78 locomotives against a target of 72. In 1997-98, it had rebuilt 74 locomotives and 12 power-packs and manufactured components worth Rs 184.8 crore.
