New Delhi, May 31: The Delhi government on Monday permitted Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) to register its Euro-I emission norms compliant ''Esteem'' car model in the National Capital Region (NCR).The transport department of the Delhi government is processing the papers sumbitted by MUL in support of Maruti 800 and Zen models complying with Euro-i emission standards, special transport commissioner MP Tyagi said here.
''We have permitted to register MUL's Esteem model in the NCR and are processing the papers submitted by MUL on Friday for the 800cc and Zen models. A decision in this regard is likely in a day or two,'' he said.
Surprisingly, market leader Maruti, which has about 75 per cent market share in the passenger-car segment and sells around 8,000 vehicles per month in the Delhi region alone, has not applied for Omni vans and Gypsy models as the company is still working on them to make them Euro-i compliant.
When contacted, Maruti chief general manager (marketing and sales) Rohtash Mal said the companyhad started dispatching Esteem models in the NCR and added that deliveries of other models would start once the state government's official permission was recieved.
When asked about the Euro norms compatibility of the Omni and Gypsy models, Mal said the company was working towards making the models Euro compliant but did not give any time frame.
The transport department of the Delhi government has permitted over 10 car manufacturers to register their Euro emission norms compliant vehicles in the NCR.
The manufacturers which have got the state government's approval include Daewoo, Hyundai, Telco, General Motors, Honda Siel, Mercedes Benz, Hindustan Motors, and Ford.
The state government has given permission to register vehicles in the NCR for specific models for which companies had certified that their car modelos comply with Euro-I/Euro-II emission norms.
Maruti approached the state governemnt quite late as it was awaiting the test results of the Pune-based Automotive Research Association of India(ARAI) regarding emission norms.
MUL has invested about Rs 600 crore to make all its existing car models to comly with Euro-II emission norms by April 2000.
It has also tied up with Denso of zapan to manufacture the multi-point-fuel-injection system, an essential part of the engine to comply with Euro-II norms.
Export models of Maruti vehicles are Euro norms compliant, company sources said.
